Rare Swan Press is delighted to announce the inaugural biennial KARI ANN FLICKINGER MEMORIAL LITERARY PRIZE for a poetry chapbook. With the very generous financial patronage of Kari’s partner, Bill Abney, we are able to offer the winning entry and four finalists both publication and prize to the overall value of £2500.00.

“Owl-light” Ekphrastic Competition, from “Stories from the eyes of an owl”, by Sarah Jane Crowson

During December 2021 Rare SwanPress published the ” Stories from the eyes of an owl” booklet collaboration with visual poet Sarah-Jane Crowson. Following to the sell out to the first limited edition 25/25 , we announced a ‘pop-up’ festive ekphrastic competition, focused on Sarah-Jane’s beautiful visual poem, “Owl-light”.

All the longlist entries were breathtaking and it was a huge honour and privilege for me, as a collage artist/poet to see how fellow poets transformed the image into something extraordinary and magical. I can’t thank Rare Swan enough for providing this opportunity for creative dialogue.

The competition was adjudicated by Sarah-Jane Crowson and Marcelle Newbold.

One first place prize of a concertina book with six 148mm x 148mm colour-printed reproductions of collages (originals made using a mixture of analogue and digital methods) and an A5 art print on Perlino Cotton 300gsm paper, from the first print run.
