Green Carnations

25 Young Irish LGBTQ+ Poets

A Collaboration in Book Design

GREEN CARNATIONS is a milestone collection in Irish contemporary poetry. John Ennis has brought together the writings of twenty-five young Irish poets, each of whom share a glimpse into their lives across an LGBTQ+ landscape. Not unlike other countries which severely punished individuals and criminalised sexuality, Ireland most recently marked the adoption of the same-sex marriages act referendum in 2016.

The book cover features bespoke art by Book Hub Publishing’s Avril Egan and was designed by Hub’s Declan Durcan. The interior was designed by Rare Swan Press editor in chief, Renée Sigel and Hub’s Niall MacGiolla BhuÍ with Caroline Redmond Kenny.

The anthology charts the ups and downs of first loves, longer-partnered relationships and sexual encounters. This is a young and motley terrain of individual struggles and dreams, expressing youthful experience of what it means to be young and human within the raw and bright LGBT+ context. This is a young person’s anthology, celebrated by the young at heart. Some might regard this collection as celebratory of this milestone, others might care only for the poetry. More importantly is that this gives an independent platform celebrating individuality and artistry.

So it was with delight and pleasure that Rare Swan agreed to collaborate with editor John Ennis, and Book Hub Publishing on the interior design of this collection.
