THE HILLS: WELCOMED EXILE; UNWELCOMED YEARNING

Scott Ting-A-Kee read for a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature Degree at the University of Guyana. He has served as a Literature teacher, assistant examiner of CAPE Literatures in English and writer-in-residence at University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. His debut novella is entitled Red Hibiscus and has published poems in the Guyana Annual. He represented Guyana as a member of the Literary Arts Unit at CARIFESTA XIV and was a participant in the 38th Annual West Indian Literature Conference and presented a paper on Michelle Jana Chand’s novel, Song, exploring the link between indentureship and wuxia heroism. 


Anita Goodfellow

Anita Goodfellow has an MA in creative writing from Bath Spa University. She divides her time between the UK and France. Her stories have been shortlisted in writing competitions and published in various anthologies. Her first novel, The Salvesen Sisters is in its final stages.

She and her husband run their own theatre company – Paper Plane Productions – and Jenny has been writing large-cast plays for this group for the last eighteen years. She has also had several poems Highly Commended in national poetry competitions. Jenny is Head of English Literature at a sixth-form college in Hull and is a proud mother of two.

Alison Lock

100 Words of Solitude. GERM HUNT

ALISON LOCK writes poetry, short fiction and creative non-fiction – the author of two short story collections, four collections of poetry, a novella; she is also a contributor to several anthologies. Her short fiction has won/been listed in a number of competitions: The London Magazine, The Sentinel Literary Quarterly, The Tillie Olsen Award, The Carve Esoteric Prize. Her work focuses on the relationship of humans and the environment, connecting an inner world with an exploration of land and sea, a love of nature, through poetry and prose. Her recent publication Lure by Calder Valley Poetry is an account of a traumatic accident and subsequent recovery; it is a poetic sequence of personal transformation.

Maria S. Picone (she/her/hers) writes, paints, and teaches from her home in South Carolina. Her publications include flash fiction, CNF, poetry, translations, visual art, and hybrid work. David Clarke is a Producer of Commercials and Podcaster. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, he now resides in West Hollywood, CA with his fiancé Leah. He is an avid writer in his spare time and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature and Criticism from the University of Massachusetts. David is also an ardent supporter of Liverpool Football Club and besides having a tattoo of their crest on his arm, he also hasn’t missed a game in years. His Mother found 100 Words of Solitude and insisted he enter, and he shares a place among the winners with not one but two of his aunts: Claire LeBras and Colette Willis.

Ermelinda Makkimane loves thinking poetry and sometimes she writes down those words. Maurice Devitt

100 Words of Solitude. MY NEIGHBOUR

Selected for Poetry Ireland Introductions in 2016, his poems have featured in a significant number of journals, both in Ireland and internationally. A previous winner of the Trocaire/Poetry Ireland and Poems for Patience competitions, Maurice Devitt was a featured poet at the Poets in Transylvania Festival in 2015 and a guest speaker at the John Berryman Centenary Conference in both Dublin and Minneapolis. His poems have been nominated for Pushcart, Forward and Best of the Net prizes and his Pushcart-nominated poem, ‘The Lion Tamer Dreams of Office Work’, was the title poem of an anthology published by Hibernian Writers in 2015. He is curator of the Irish Centre for Poetry Studies site and in 2018 published his debut collection, ‘Growing Up in Colour’, with Doire Press.

Jessica Pape moved from Germany to Galway in 2009, and worked as a researcher and project coordinator for Trinity College Dublin. She started creative writing classes in Galway with Kevin Higgins in 2016. She was longlisted for the Over the Edge New Writer of the Year Competition in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and shortlisted for the CUIRT Spoken Word Platform 2018.
